Last night, Marucci Sports kicked off their second annual Marucci World Series in Baton Rouge, LA. Over the next 4 days, 48 teams from 15 different states, representing 19 Marucci Founder’s Club organizations, will compete for bragging rights and the title of Marucci World Series Champions!
The event began with the opening ceremonies, followed by the Fastest Man Competition and the Home Run Derby. METx 17U-Dunn teammates Alec Carr and Simeon Woods-Richardson would put an exclamation point on the night, and let everyone know that METx was a tournament favorite.
The format for the home run derby was simple. In the first round, each organization had 3 minutes to hit as many home runs as they could. It was up to each organization how many players would hit during that 3 minutes. At the end of the first round, the top 4 scores would advance to the finals. The four remaining organizations would then use the same format, but only had 2 minutes to tally as many long balls as possible.
Carr and Woods-Richardson would be one of the final groups to hit in the first round. Each of them would have one minute and thirty seconds to try and over take the leader, GBG, who had 8 home runs. After Carr put on an impressive display with 6 home runs, Woods-Richardson would vault them into the lead, adding 4 more for a total of 10 first-round home runs.
Advancing as the #1 seed, the METx duo was set to hit last in the final round. GBG would set the number to beat at 8 home runs, but the fireworks weren’t over with yet. Carr would start the finals with 4 long balls, and after Woods-Richardson blasted the fourth of his own, he needed just one more to take the title. After 2 swings, and only 8 seconds left on the clock, Woods-Richardson launched the final pitch of the night into the darkness over the left-center wall!
Games begin tomorrow morning, with the finals of each age division set for Sunday afternoon!
